This syndrome is characterized by severe and prolonged exhaustion (fatigue) that is not relieved by rest and is not a direct consequence of other diseases.
Cause
The cause is still unknown. Recent studies suggest that the cause may be an inflammation of the nervous system which can be caused by some type of immune response or an autoimmune process. This syndrome can occur when a viral illness is compounded by an inadequate immune response or other factors that may play a role as age, prior illness, stress, environmental or genetic disposition. It is more common in women between 30 and 50 years of age.
