Ozonoterapia

DIABETES, A FACTORY FOR OXIDATION AND AGING OF THE SICK PERSON

Ozone is a potent antioxidant in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers

Foot ulcers are sores or diabetic foot wounds that affect people with diabetes, a disease in which blood glucose is abnormally high (hyperglycemia). If an ulcer is not treated and does not cure, it may become infected. Since this can cause the need to amputate his foot, is very important to prevent them.

Diabetic disease is one of the most significant health problems, both for its extraordinary frequency, and for its enormous social and economic impact.

Terrifying statistics

It should be known that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in many countries. Half of the lower limb amputations are performed due to diabetes; it increases between 2 and 6 times the frequency of myocardial infarction, and over 10 times that of cerebral thrombosis.

One of the most feared problems  because it affects the quality of life of diabetics, is the appearance of ulcers on the feet as a consequence of  two of the most common chronic complications of this disease,: peripheral neuropathy and vascular insufficiency.

The average hospital stay is usually very high, about 22 days. A third of diabetics admitted in a hospital is due to a lower limb vascular disease. In 10% of the people who the disease is discovered already have the occlusive vascular disease. The diabetic is five times more prone to ischemic damage in the feet, and almost 70% of amputations that are done in a hospital are due to diabetes.

Between 35-40% of diabetics suffer from a chronic wound at least once in their life an up to 20% have an amputation independently of the type of ulcer present.

Every 30 seconds a patient with diabetes is being amputated.

All these data lead us to reflect on the importance and social impact of this disease that is not easily resolved. The figures speak for themselves.

Treatment

Studies and the extensive clinical experience have shown that ozone is highly effective in situations of ischemia and infection. Ozone in the treatment of injuries considered serious with circulatory compromise, severe infections, or with a healing delay, can avoid a process that could end up disastrously in an amputations or death.

Its beneficial effects are based on:

1. Antibacterial effect both systemic and local due to the discrete formation of peroxides.

2. Stimulatory effect of nitric oxide secretion, which is the largest and most powerful endothelial vasodilation.

3. Increased red blood cell elasticity, allowing deeper penetration into the microcirculation and thus improve blood flow.

4. Increased production, always at the red cell level of 2,3 DPG (diphosphoglycerate), responsible for the transfer of oxygen to tissues.

5. Improvement of oxygen metabolism by increasing glucose utilization, fatty acids and activation of anti-free radical enzymes.

All this leads to stimulation of the healing process of ulcerative lesions, where there is a clear failure of cicatrisation.

Relieve plantar pressure. The member must remain in a favorable position of the lymphatic drainage.

Debride the ulcer regularly, with the removal of all callus and nonviable tissue formed around the ulcer.

Wash the wound with ozonated water and local application of ozone in a boot.

Use ozonated oil in the lesion, which must remain occluded until the next cure.

Apply rectal systemic ozone therapy and / or mayor autohemotherapy .

A study by Dr. Joseph I. Fernández, Carmen Pina and Bertha Morales,  with 1153 patients with different  angiological pathologies  in the Celestino Hernández Robau University Hospital, Villa Clara (Cuba), using this technique in a period of one year demonstrated a significant decrease in the number of amputations, a better and faster healing of ulcerative lesions, and the healing of lymphangitis.

The results obtained by researchers in several countries are showing encouraging results obtained after the application of this therapy in the field of Angiology.
