OZONETHERAPY IN CANCER
Ozone therapy is a complementary and very helpful treatment in the fight against cancer. Its role is to make difficult the reproduction of tumour cells.
The cancerous area develops under hypoxia conditions, that is, with low levels of oxygen. Therefore, all those things, like ozone therapy that helps to increase the oxygen levels will contribute to stop the progress of tumour cells. Ozone therapy also radically increases the quality of life oh these patients.
Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg– Medicine Nobel price in 1931- proved that any cell becomes cancerous in less than 48 hours if the level of oxygen in the place where they are decreases by 40%.
All healthy cells obtain their energy to live through an “aerobic media” that is, using oxygen. Nevertheless, when the cell become cancerous it uses an anaerobic media (without oxygen) fermenting glucose, this process is known as glycolisis only that by using this secondary path it gets 20 times less energy. Therefore, the cancerous cell has a need to consume high quantities of glucose, forcing the body to reproduce cells massively forming what is know as a tumour.
The process of glucose fermentation gives way to the formation of carbon monoxide and lactic acid, which in turn creates an acid environment to which less and less oxygen can get into. That means that with a greater consumption of glucose there is more acidity and greater cell reproduction within the tumour.
The body interprets this process of acidification as a lesion and sent macrophages and T cells that in turn, in order to repair the tissue liberates growth factor, which is able to stimulate the replication of the cancerous cell. The situation is made worse because the cancerous cell does not have antioxidant enzymes, allowing it to survive in an acid media.
Ozone role in the regularization of oxygen metabolism, gives it great power to re-instate the oxygen supply and in this way reverse the situation to use the aerobic path to produce energy. The result is the re-establishment of many of the normal metabolic functions, amongst them the reduction of the lactic acidity.
The transitory oxidative stress produced by ozone is deadly for the cancerous cell, due to the weakness of its antioxidant defence mechanism, the cells lack enzymes such as: superoxido dismutasa, catalasa and aglutatión peroxidasa.
Normal cells on the contrary do not suffer damage because they do posses that very efficient enzymatic defence shield. Furthermore, the modulating activity of the immune system supports the reestablishment of the immune system itself to help it eliminate abnormal cells.
In those cases where the individual is being submitted to radiotherapy, ozone therapy has a synergetic effect because radiotherapy’s effectiveness is based on free radicals production, specifically hydroxyl radicals. However, to produce it, the area to be irradiated must be oxygenated, that is, ionized radiation works if there is oxygen.
Therefore, the ozone capacity to increase oxygen transference not only secures radiotherapy’s greater efficacy, but also reduces the secondary effects produced by it, by protecting healthy cells when it activates basic antioxidants systems that fight against free radicals.
Preconditioning the body with ozone before receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy or when having a surgical intervention, prepares the body by stimulating its defensive antioxidant and immunological systems, therefore minimizing the treatment’s secondary effects and having a synergic effect over the therapeutic results.
The ways for ozone application in cancer treatment are:
Research continues in this field, however, ozone therapy has taken a leading role as a supportive and very useful therapy in the treatment of the cancer patient.
